To Be One, Ask One

To Be One, Ask One

From the East – February 2017

My Brother,

The 3rd Monday in each February is a day to celebrate the President’s of our nation. It is also the birth month of our First President, George Washington.

George Washington was not only our First President and the General of the Continental Army but was also Master Mason.

General Washington was afforded, and accepted, the honor of leading our Country through one of its most tumultuous times by winning our freedom from Great Britain.

After the Revolutionary War , during the Constitution Convention George Washington was unanimously elected as our First President..  Six years later President Washington laid the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol.

In the second part of the Entered Apprentice Degree one of the very first parts is placing the newly initiated Brother in the North East Corner. This is symbolic of the laying of the cornerstone of any great edifice.

Last month I wrote about all Brothers meeting on the Level and Parting on the Square. This is important symbolically because prior to even setting the cornerstone you must have a level foundation to start.

The Entered Apprentice Degree is our version of leveling the foundation through illustrating the tenets and meaning of Masonry. It is also the laying of that cornerstone for every man who wishes to become a Master Mason.

The working tools identified during the Entered Apprentice Degree help us understand what it takes to make our foundation level and begin the task of chiseling away our impurities so that we can grow into those great edifices.

As with any great accomplishment we are only as strong as our foundation will let us. We mustn’t forget those that helped us chisel away our imperfections that allow us to become better men than we were yesterday. The same rings true for every man who wishes to begin their  journey with us; we must help them chisel away their rough edges to become better men.

Fraternally,

Jonathan Murray
