From the East – May 2019
Dear Brothers,
May 27th is Memorial Day this year. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was a day to honor the fallen from the Civil War by decorating their graves. The Civil War was one of the darkest (if not the darkest) periods in our nation’s history. And yet, amidst the horrors of war, there are numerous documented incidents of Masonic fraternal care and brotherly love.
One of the best-known occurrences is commemorated by the “Friend to Friend” monument on the Gettysburg battlefield. It memorializes the services rendered by Union Captain Henry Bingham to mortally wounded Confederate General Lewis Armistead. Another example occurred when a Union Cavalry officer posted guards around the home of Albert Pike (who fought for the
Confederacy), to protect his extensive Masonic Library. I’ve heard it said that not even the fires of war can burn through the bonds of Freemasonry. Actions such as these show Masons’ commitment to Brotherhood, and what our Masonic precepts truly mean.
While this holiday has its’ roots in the Civil War, it has come (rightfully so) to be a day to honor all who have fallen in service to our country. It is a day of special meaning to us as Masons, due to the numbers of Veterans, and active duty Servicemen in our Lodges. At some point in the day, amid the parades,
cook-outs and celebrations, it would be well to take a moment to remember those who sacrificed so that we could live as we do.
