From the East – June 2021
Greetings Brethren,
As our Lodge is about to go “dark” during the summer months I thought that “dark” would be an appropriate topic, but talking about “dark” is no fun so let’s discuss “light” instead.
From the beginning of the Entered Apprentice degree through the Master Mason degree light is a central and recurring theme. As Mackey points out light is not just about truth and wisdom but is the very essence of speculative Masonry. I think we should also understand that being brought to light means both to be initiated into a new existence as well as to arrive at a full understanding of that new existence. Thus we are lead to Wisdom, Strength and Beauty.
Throughout history light is associated with knowledge and goodness. The symbol for education is a lit lamp illuminating the darkness. Darkness is associated with ignorance and evil. The young of most species are drawn naturally to the stimulus of light during their developmental stages. Light allows perception which leads to learning, beauty and joy. Without light, there would be no visual arts or science.
So while our Lodge may be dark as in not formally meeting in the lodge, let us all make an effort to keep the light of Masonic learning and brotherhood bright throughout the summer.
Fraternally,
F L Vernamonti WM
