To Be One, Ask One

To Be One, Ask One

From the East – February 2016

My Dear Brother,

As the New Year continues to unfold, so does each of our Masonic journeys.  The candidates are continuing their path for more light, and with the support of their new Brethren, they will soon begin their Fellowcraft Degree.  This is significant to the Master Masons of the Lodge, as the Degree serves as a reminder of their own experiences. As candidates begin to learn each of the Masonic symbols, Master Masons can also take time to reflect on the great lessons and ideas that they represent.

The Fellowcraft Degree symbolizes the manhood period of life.  The responsibilities of a Fellowcraft are to acquire and apply the knowledge to all  of life’s duties. The tools: the Square, Level, and Plumb, are to be used symbolically.  The square is an emblem of morality, and teaches us to square our lives and actions to all mankind.  The level, a symbol of equality, reminds us that all men are created equal.  The plumb signifies uprightness in life.

On the back of our 2016 Challenge Coin, you’ll find the phrase, “Masons Don’t Seek Men, Men Seek Masonry”.  In designing this year’s coin, I chose this saying as I believe it illustrates the idea that these principles are intrinsic to each of us.  With Masonry in our  lineage, we can pass these ideals down to the next generation and continue to make “Good Men Better.”

I remain your friend and brother,

Jeremiah Phillips

Worshipful Master
